5s Method for Soothing a Baby,I’m going to talk to you about how to soothe a fussy, colicky baby. This is my friend Stella. She’s here to help me demonstrate this. We’re going to use the 5s technique which is developed by Harvey Karp, a pediatrician in California. They’re born with this calming reflex which is something that they have experienced inside mom, so the way we want to soothe these babies is to elicit that calming reflex. I’m going to show you how to do that right now. We’ve already got her swaddled.
We’ll just kind of tighten that swaddle up for us. I know you were happy and you want to do this sequence pretty quickly. Arms should be nice and tight and hips nice and loose. The first S is swaddling. The second S is sideline position. Get her in your arms, put your hand against her tummy, and provide a little bit of pressure. You’re quickly going to move into the shushing step so we lift her up towards our face.
You’re going to start moving right into jiggling while you’re shushing. Don’t drop any of these steps. Then, the last one is the pacifier to suck. I’m going to go through these next three quickly. Shhh. Now we’ve got a calm baby. You can already see Stella’s eyes as I was shushing. You can probably see her eyelids starting to drift closed. If we were to do this for another couple of minutes Stella would be drifting off to sleep and then you would just simply take the pacifier out or leave it in. Then, lay her down in her crib, bassinet or her pack and play on her back and in her swaddle for a nice nap or sleep. .
